The Day I Missed My Flight — But My Luggage Didn’t

After saying goodbye to my mom and brother who brought me to the airport in Amsterdam I took off to my first plane to start my travel to Canada. I had a “comfortable” middle seat and a screen that didn’t work so yep that was an amazing typical flight experience. After getting in Calgary, Canada with of course some delay I could go get my luggage and go get my work papers. After waiting for some time and still no sight of my luggage I decided to go to the (no idea what to call it) office first to get my work papers thinking my stuff will probably be there waiting for me when I get back.

I was surprised to be the only one waiting in line but still it took took forever before they called me forward (keep in mind the time is ticking to get to my next flight). Well, when it finally was my turn the whole process didn’t take to long, just showed proof of my insurance, et voila, I had the papers and back I want to get my luggage … that still wasn’t there. Ok, what now? I went to the office from the company I was flying with to ask what to do and where my stuff went and informed them of my little time frame. They said "no worries we will make sure it is on your flight to Calgary”. So, that turned out to be easy. Now I could start my sprint through the airport to my next gate (with less than 30 min. left).

Got to security and if you thought I would be lucky and be able to just walk through. Nope, apparently bringing a polaroid camera with you to Canada results in a million questions. After getting them convinced not to send send the camera and the extra polaroids through the X-ray thing they agreed to inspect in manually but they had to open everything. Well at this point at just said screw it open it al up if you really need to I just need to get my flight.

Got through, continued my sprint and … missed the plane. Now I’m breathing like a dying old cow, blisters on my feet (because I thought it was a good idea to wear my new shoes), no plane and where’s my stuff? Did it go on the plane? I went to the next gate over to ask what to do and they put me in the right direction to get more information about a new flight. I get to the information desk explained why I missed my flight and that went actually pretty easy. They gave put me on the next flight without me having to pay anything extra.

Went to the gate, kinda just sat there staring at the snow for 4 hours since I was to exhausted to do anything but to paranoid about my stuff to get some sleep. And finally boarded the plane and on my way I went to Kamloops. Just kinda hooping my luggage would be there waiting for me.

And yes, I missed my flight but my luggage didn’t. And there it was my little black and white panther print suitcase just standing in a corner of the smal airport waiting for me. That was a different kind of happiness I felt.

Next step get a taxi, this was kinda of unexpected of me but when I went outside to get a taxi al the drivers where Indian and I mean all of them. Asked him to drive me to the best budget inn where I had a room for the night, arrived there and … the people there where Indian aswel. It might have been my sleep deprived mind by now, but I was so confused about this.

Anyway got my room crashed on the bed ready for some sleep, by now it was around 02.00 in the morning closed my eyes. And then I heard it, the hotel was located right next to some very busy train tracks. I did not sleep that night.
